Makerere University woes are escalating day by day. The latest from Makerere hill has it that the university Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe who lately is on ‘rampage’ has Wednesday suspended student’s guild election which occur annually.
In a letter he extended to the Dean of Students titled “Re: suspension of the student’s guild elections” Nawangwe says, “reference is made to the communication by the guild speaker regarding extension of Student’s Guild Elections.”
“Accordingly, I hereby suspend the student’s guild elections to provide a conducive environment to facilitate the process of returning the university to full normalcy.”
He indicated that an extension for the election process will be permitted in accordance with article 73(1) of the student’s guild constitution should circumstances warrant so.
The institution has lately been engulfed in a standoff that has seen several colleges halt classes protesting Nawangwe’s ‘dictatorial’ decisions to suspend a number of lecturers.
