Uganda Communications Commission, (UCC) has issued a directive for closure of Daily Monitor online news website saying that they published a story that attacked and damaged the person of Speaker Rebecca Kadaga.
The statement dated February 6th 2019 signed by UCC Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi states that UCC received a complaint of 4th February 2019 from the office of the speaker highlighting that Monitor publications through their online plat form had published fake news against the speaker.
“The statement partly states “The cession has, in accordance with sections5(1) (i), 31, 45 and schedule 4 of the Uganda Communications Act 2013 commend full investigations into the subject complaint to determine whether / or not Monitor Publications Limited published the subject story in accordance with the expected standards and codes of ethics of journalism.
In order to avoid recurrence breaches during the investigations and in view of the fact that Monitor Publication Limited refused to obtain the requisite authorisation for provision of date communication services in Uganda, the Commission here by DIRECTS … that Monitor publications should immediately SUSPEND any further provision of online data communication services (online newspaper services) …”
Trumpet News has learnt that Monitor published a story about a witch doctor who claimed to have hosted Speaker Kadaga at his shrine. It is from here that the public got to learn of the story that left them in shock.
