Mubarak Munyagwa

Mubarak Munyagwa, Ssserunga was born and raised in Murwera, Kicheche Kitagwenda county to Bruhan Sseruga.  He went to Mahyoro Primary school, Kitagwenda High school for O level and joined Nakasero Secondary school where he completed his advanced level.   In 2014, Munyagwa graduated with a diploma in Law from Law Development Centre. He is currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Law at Makerere University.

While growing up, Munyagwa was always patronising and everything else seemed to be beneath his dignity. He hated school and always escaped from boarding school to go to hang out in Ibanda town. His vigour in the political realm especially opposition cannot go unrecognised as he was and still is always publically criticising the NRM government.

In 2011, Mubarak Munyagwa  quit his  teaching profession and contested for Mayor Kawempe Division and emerged winner. During his term in office as the Mayor, he was commonly known as ‘Mugati gwa Butter’ and was refereed to many as a comedian and was closely compared to Kato Lubwama. It is a no wonder he showed up for nominations on a boda boda. He was a controversial Mayor who was always accused for not attending council meetings on claims that the meetings had lost substance.

Munyagwa’s earlier political journey was easily compared for a hide and seek game and he was always not sure about his presence in the public and If he was not arrested, he would be reported missing. Two Months before the 2011 general elections, Munyagwa was reported missing and it was alleged that he was kidnapped and feared dead but later resurfaced in one piece.

The self made Politicians is also famous for his bitter exchange with Sheik Muzaata which went viral and also kidnapping himself during the 2011 elections. In 2014, Munyagwa was condemned by Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata for carrying out anti Islam duas (prayers) he had held in the bush with a group of politicians to extol for President Yoweri Museveni’s downfall.

In 2017, the legislator was remanded to a civil prison after failing to pay shs100 million he owed a one John Baptist Maali as a result of botched land transaction. He was later rescued by his tight friend Dr. Kizza Besigye who coughed part of the money which was demanded for his release.

During the FDC presidential race last year, candidate Munyagwa stepped down to pave way for Patrick Amuriat who is now the party president after defeating Mugisha Muntu.

In Augut 2018, FDC president Patrick Amuriat appointed Mubarak Munyagwa as the Chairperson of COSASE but he could not take office as the tenure of the current team headed by Abdu Katuntu was still on but up to this moment, all opposition eyes are on Munyagwa.
