PLE: Boys Beat Girls as Overall Performance Improves

Marry Okwakol, the Chairperson UNEB hands over results to First Lady Janet Museveni

The Minister of Education First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni has Thursday released Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results from Office of the Prime Minister conference hall in Kampala.

A total number of 67193 candidates sat for the 2018 examination at 13072 registered centers across the country.

11% of the pupils who sat for PLE have qualified to join secondary education compared to 9.1% in 2017.

Boys outcompeted girls in performance with 41064 attaining division compared to 35529.

Over 3000 candidates’ results have been withheld by the National Examination Board (UNEB) over malpractice with more cases reported in Bundibujo District, Western Uganda.

The First Lady advised parents that they need to follow up and find you if their children registered with UNEB.

“For those in schools without registration centers, parents should be in the know of which centers they have used, and which venues they are using,” Janet said.

She further directed District Education Officers (DEOs) to carry out regular supervisions especially in places with poor performance.

“Reluctance of these officers also leads to poor performance because it encourages negligence among teachers,” added First Lady.

According to a survey conducted by Twaweza, Sauti Za Wanainchi, on education in Uganda, parents revealed that their biggest challenge is excess financial contributions required by the schools.

“Both in primary and secondary schools, parents say the main challenge they face in regards to

their children’s school is the excessive amount of financial contributions required from parents

by schools. This is a particularly common problem cited in regard to secondary schools, where

one out of four (23%) cite the issue, but even for primary schools (14%) it is cited more than any

other issue,” the report says.

It also adds that 46% of the parents in Uganda don’t share problems they encounter at schools which more likely affect their children.
