Opposition icon Col. Kizza Besigye has maintained his earlier stance that no election presided over by the current regime can usher in a peaceful transition of power.

He was however quick to defend his decision of contesting in the same election in 2016 saying it was his party FDC that compelled him into the competition with hope of throwing out the ‘dictatorship’.

The horse voiced political heavyweight added that the advantage of engaging in ‘an already rigged’ election was to expose the regime and also gauge the FDC support.

“The irregularities which were everywhere were a signal that if the contest was fairer enough then Mr Museveni would be no more,” said Besigye who was appearing on local radio CBS on Thursday night.

However, reiterating his earlier position, Besigye is still optimistic an election can not cause regime change if it is still presided over by the “junta.”

He says, Ugandans need to first liberate themselves from the dictatorial rule and therefore determine which election they must participate in.

Opposition too weak

Similarly, he slammed the forces of change as very weak with limited resources compared to the national leadership they compete with reason there is no room for dialogue between NRM and those opposed to its rule.

Besigye said that the opposition groups in Uganda are still too weak, disoriented and disorganized to hold dialogue with the president.

According to Besigye, Uganda’s opposition instead of galvanizing strength, members are busy fighting against each other.

“They are biting each other, so much so that they don’t even have time to look at the mess within the country’s leadership,” he observed.
