Kadaga Insists on Katuntu: I am the Speaker, My Decision is Good for Uganda

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga

The Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has reminded opposition party FDC that she is the head of the house and her decisions can’t be contested.

Kadaga thus insisted that Hon Abdu Katuntu who chairs Parliament’s Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) should be allowed ample time to conclude his investigations on Bank of Uganda.

Mr. Katuntu’s term of office will expire on January 13 amid a probe into controversial sale of Crane Bank and six other private banks.

The FDC party which is mandated to fill the office with new candidate already appointed Hon Mubarak Munyagwa as Katuntu’s replacement.

However, Kadaga before Parliament went into holiday proposed that Katuntu and his team should be left to exhaust the process and submit a report, a proposal that has faced hostility from the Leader of Opposition Ms Betty Aol.

Whereas the party weighed in on Ms Betty, Kadaga has Thursday reiterated her position saying she is the Speaker and her decision is unchallenged.

“My request is not to say we will not have changes but the changes will come after they have reported,” Kadaga told journalists at Parliament.

She added, “I only requested for a few days after the committee’s term has expired. I requested for only two months and in the event that they have not finished the report, I asked for end of February.”

Kadaga said after receiving the report the changes will come.

“I am the speaker of the house and my proposal is good for the institution and people of Uganda.”

The decision by the FDC to throw out Katuntu is seen as an impediment by the main party against after the man from Eastern Uganda openly criticized the party’s political approach and also rejected to support Col Kizza Besigye’s presidential bid, a man that has turned himself into a political god in opposition.
