Sami Ghurra, a Syrian citizen is being held at Jinja Road Police where he has spent six months with no hopes of getting a fair hearing of any crime leveled against him.
Ghurra, 26, recalls he was arrested by detectives in plain clothes on May 15, 2018 as he moved from his rented apartment in Rubaga, a Kampala suburb to look for lunch.
“I was handcuffed and driven to unknown location and thrown in jail,” he narrated to this website his ordeal while at Jinja Road Police cells.
Ghurra a dentist by profession says out of consulting he learnt he was being held at SIU in Kireka, another suburb in Eastern part of Kampala.
At SIU he spent there a few days but his efforts to find out his charges hit a dead end.
He was transferred to Jinja Road Police where he is being detained to date with efforts of identifying his charges yielding no success.
Mr. Ghurra says he came to Uganda on 25th August 2015 having been tipped off by his friends in South Sudan where he was operating a dental clinic.
“I was told in Uganda there are opportunities and I will make more money. I decided to move here,” A helpless Ghurra said.
He said his efforts to reach officials at Jinja Road Police remain a nightmare as no officer gives him attention.
He appeals to human rights defenders to intervene in his matters.
No police authorities were willing to speak about Ghurra’s issues when contacted.
