12 Feared Dead in Fresh Bududa Landslides

Twelve people are feared to have died after heavy rains pounded Eastern District of Bududa on Thursday afternoon causing massive landslides that ravaged the area.

Uganda Red Cross officials who rushed to the area say Bukalasi subcounty has been affected more with seven people reportedly missing.

“The preliminary report indicates that the number is likely to increase from the reported 7 but we are yet to establish the actual numbers,” said Irene Nakasiita, the Red Cross Uganda spokesperson.

The humanitarian body described the situation as “tense.”

“Community members are on high tension, scared and fleeing their homes for safety,” Nakasiita said.

“In the meantime, the whole District, Bududa is still experiencing heavy downpour and we are expecting more of the same in other landslide prone areas,” she added.

However police authorities in the area say the number of those feared dead had risen to 12.
