Selling food products and other consumable goods in Uganda without checking their the manufacturing date and expiry period remains a high practice on Ugandan Market.
According to Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UNBS) guidelines, no trader is supposed to sell any product whose expiry date has ended but many traders across the country seems to have violated this warning and have since sold Kiri soda.
The company which deals in flavoured carbonated soft drinks has for months been selling expired drinks.
This follows a series of operations launched by UNBS in the recent past to crackdown fake and expired products on market, but someone how sellers of Kiri Soda have eluded the process.
This website understands, Kiri soda which appears in all forms of flavours is distributed in all towns across the country.
The soda is often bought off by unsuspecting buyers since few take time to check out the date.
After a tip off by a member by a member of the public, this website has indeed established that the soda is widely traded in all suburbs of Kampala, Arua, Mbarara, Jinja, Isingiro, Gulu and many more.
What however remains shocking is that our efforts to find out who the manufacturers of this soda are yielded nothing as we couldn’t locate information about the company or even their contacts.
When we contacted the Managing Director of UNBS, Ben Manyindo he acknowledged to have information of Kiri soda and its manufacturers but denied he was aware of sale of expired drinks.
“Tell me where that soda is sold so that I send there my team to investigate,” Manyindo said on phone.
When we told him that have pictures showing expire dates to that effect, Manyindo said he cannot rely on images as evidence.
As to could be the likely charges levelled on the manufacturer if it is established Kiri soda on market is expired, Manyindo declined to answer saying he was attending an urgent meeting.
