Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu has come out to clarify on the statement that has widely been circulated on social media on Tuesday in which he allegedly announced he will be leaving FDC.
“Fellow Ugandans, Following our nationwide consultations that were carried out between 15/1/2018 and 7/9/2018, I today held a meeting with party president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Hon. Patrick Oboi Amuriat to discuss our findings and resolutions. I hereby would like to inform the country of our decision to leave the FDC with immediate effect. We will be holding a press conference on Thursday the 27th of October 2018 to discuss this and our future plans in detail,” the brief statement reads.
Hours later, it emerged the declaration was fake news by FDC members.
However speaking to the media following the announcement, the former FDC president who had been holed up in a meeting with his successor at Fairway Hotel didn’t disassociate himself from the statement, but rather termed the timing as ‘premature and careless.’
Muntu extended apologies to the nation saying his official communication will be extended through his known social media pages on Facebook and Twitter.
At the time of the release of the announcement, Muntu was meeting Amuriat to discuss his exit plans. The meeting ended prematurely having been disrupted by a gang of youth allegedly belonging to the mainstream party.
The development comes after Muntu spent over 9 months carrying out nationwide consultation on what should be his next course of action after he lost the FDC presidency elections.
In his conceding speech, Muntu warned that he would be taking painful decisions because of irreconcilable differences he had with some top officials of the party.
Muntu has nearly all his time in the FDC been described as a mole serving the ruling party.
However, Muntu didn’t deny claims which suggested he will be quitting the party.
