As threats against prominent persons continue, the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) has taken over investigations into the alleged death threats against particular individuals.
The threats which have been sent through text messages warn their targets that they are next on their “hit” list.
Already, senior Police Officer Siraje Bakaleke, the former Regional Police Commander for Kampala Metropolitan and Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga have received such threats.
The threats aren’t being taken lightly seeing that previous targets have been “worked on” with the latest being the recent shooting of the former Buyende District Police Commander Mohammed Kirumira.
Kirumira was gunned down two weeks ago in Bulenga, a suburb not far from Kampala on Saturday evening together with a female friend who too shot and killed in the melee.
Other targets that have been cornered and executed include former Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga, former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi and other Muslim Sheiks.
In the new hit-list, the assailants are targeting 12 targets who include two prominent police men, two lawyers, two legislators, two journalists, two clerics, two military officers and two judiciary officials.
TrumpetNews could not independently verify the accuracy of this information but sources close to CMI intimated that it was true that the said list existed.
“It is true, some people have been sent death threats and been warned that they are the next targets. The people sending these messages have previously claimed to be behind the killings of other people that have been slain summarily after receiving similar threats. This cannot be taken lightly, reason CMI has instituted investigations” said a source who did not want to be named as he is not allowed to speak on CMI’s behalf.
Before his death, slain cop Mohammad Kirumira had been sent death threat messages and vehemently said he would not be deterred from his mission of exposing the rot in the Police Force. He was later to be gunned down on Saturday evening in Bulenga by unknown assailants riding on heavy motorbikes.
At the height of the killings, members of parliament asked for heightened security for themselves since they were on the target list.
Already, President Museveni promised armed guards and police escort cars for all members of parliament after the death of their colleague, Ibrahim Abiriga.
Indeed, President Museveni in his last address to the nation promised that all armed criminals using some gaps in security to kill people would be dealt with.
Among the measures proposed by the president to end criminality included banning of sweater and jacket hoods for boda boda riders, registering and placing tracking devices in all motorbikes, and the set up of street cameras in all urban areas which would be monitored 24 hours plus the use of UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles) to track down offending criminals.
When contacted, the Military Intelligence commander Brig. Abel Kandiho couldn’t respond to our numerous calls.
Earlier, army spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire when reached said, “I am not aware of this new killer hit list.”
He however, said he would forward the information to the concerned parties as subject of investigation.
Three MPs who include Gerald Karuhanga, William Nzonghou and Connie Galiwango have raised the same matter on the Hansard having received threatening text messages.
Our highly places sources say that the security apparatus is yet to establish the source and motive of the recent killings, but anticipate that the continued assassination of government officials is to undermine regime as having failed to protect its citizens.
