Emergency responses in health related cases have helped save lives. This though wasnt the case for Bududa Hospital nurse who died of over-bleeding since there was no fuel in the hospital ambulance to rush her for further treament
Residents of the Eastern district of Bududa are still in shock about the scary news of the death of one of their own and have asked the Ministry if Health to take action against the Hospital administration for neglect of duty.
Esther Akello, a 36-year nurse in Bududa hospital collapsed and died from over bleeding after the ambulance driver said he only had instructions to drive referral cases to Mbale hospital. Esther’s case was not among the ones referred to.
The incident has sparked off confusion at the hospital causing fear for the hospital administration since Akello’s colleagues want action taken against the driver.
Bududa Hospital serves over 500,000 people from the Bududa, Manafwa, Namisidwa and some parts of western Kenya.
The late Akello who was a nurse in the female ward at the hospital died as a result of negligence by the hospital administration who neighbors contacted when she collapsed. The hospital administration reportedly ignored the residents claiming that the ambulance didnt have fuel.
John Baptist Nambeshe the Manjiya Member of Parliament who is also a former district chairperson says that the behavior of most health workers in Bududa district is intolerable and complacent.
Dr. John Baptist Wanyaye, the Commissioner Ambulance Services at the Ministry of Health said that ideally ambulance service is supposed to be free to the patients.
He however says that the patients can only get to make a contribution when the district finds itself short of funds for such operations.
