The legal officers of detained UPDF Gen. Kale Kayihura have told Court Martial that their client has health complications which require special medical attention abroad.

Kayihura’s lead counsel Peter Kabatsi asked court not to incur stringent conditions in case he is granted bail but rather be given ‘reasonable conditions.’

The lawyer further asked the Chairman Court Martial Lt Gen Andrew Gutti not to ask Kayihura to deposit his passport because he needs to travel immediately when he is freed.

The former Inspector General of Police has spent 76 days in a military detention since he was arrested on claims that he was attempting to flee the country through Lake Mburo.

Kayihura was charged with three counts of failing to protect war materials and illegal kidnap and repatriation of Rwandan Nationals between 2012 and 2018.

Whereas Kayihura denied all the charges, the prosecutor asked Court not to consider his bail application because he might jeopardize investigations once he is out.

The once powerful army General on Tuesday presented three sureties; Maj Gen Sam Kavuma the deputy commander of Land Forces, Maj Gen James Mugira who heads NEC, the commercial arm of the army and Entebbe Woman MP Rosemary Tumisiime.

Lt Gen Gutti has adjourned court for one hour to make his ruling.
