The rise of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine has sent the public questioning the loyalty of long standing opposition leader Kizza Besigye.
Bobi Wine who has popularised the ‘people power’ campaign has taken the political arena in a huge wave that has swept the country
The artiste and politician helped Asuman Basalirwa capture the Bugiri Municipality MP seat, and the latest being Arua Municipality seat that Bobi swung in to have Kasiano Wadri trounce NRM’s Nusura Tiperu.
The ensuing last campaign chaos got Bobi arrested, paraded before the military court before eventually being freed, but re-arrested to face civil court in which he will appear on Monday to face treason charges
Bobi Wine’s unrelenting political force has awed many political supporters and endeared the MP to many as his Democratic Party picks ground.
Against that backdrop, political observers and opposition fanatics have since asked long time opposition leader to pave way for Bobi Wine.
Besigye questioned
Responding to the taunts, Besigye said he was no mole after being accused of peddling falsehoods, and accused of being in bed with his long time rival Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Besigye, during the bush war worked as a personal doctor to Museveni while fighting the Obote regime in the 80s.
The FDC founder after serving in many capacities in the ruling government fell out with Museveni in 1999 accusing him of abrogating the constitution.
Since then after penning a damning dossier on army, Besigye became regime’s number one enemy.
You are a political dinosaur
Besigye has also been accused of being a political dinosaur who has failed to win elections against the NRM.
The opposition leader who has been at the forefront of opposing Museveni even earning the title of Uganda’s longest serving opposition figure.
“Besigye, you have been in our faces since 2001 when you decided to start the struggle to dislodge Museveni but have not delivered us to the promised land. Tukusaba kati olekele abalala nga Bobi Wine nabo bageze kko kubanga gwe byagana”- loosely translated to it is time for you to let other leaders do the opposition campaign since you have not gotten us to victory questioned the callers
The callers also accused Besigye of ‘suffocating’ other potential opposition figures like Norbert Mao, Amama Mbabazi, General Mugisha Muntu and sending Betty Kamya away to re-joined Museveni in the NRM
Loyalty questioned
Appearing before Medi Nsereko on CBS’s popular evening show ‘Kiriza oba gana’, Besigye was questioned why he was considered ‘too lenient’ with the regime he was fighting yet young turks like Bobi Wine had wholly given their opposition stance a full swing with no questionable marks.
Besigye added that he would never be close to a regime that allegedly resulted in the death of his brother Ssasi Kifeefe who died a few months after being released from Luzira Prison on charges of treason.
Callers also said Besigye was would not be trusted because he was formerly too close to the regime he was fighting and probably broke off because of personal whiffs that were not genuinely concrete to form real opposition.
The former FDC President’s popularity has been waning with FDC disintegrating with former top shots fighting while divisions, in-fighting and intrigue took centre stage in the party that is considered Uganda’s biggest political party.
