Fresh Clashes Erupt in Gayaza as Residents Protest Bobi’s Detention

Residents cut off the road

Intense clashes have erupted between residents and security in Gayaza town, a few kilometres outside Kampala Friday evening.

The charged crowds protested the continued incarceration of their area MP Robert Kyagulanyi who is currently detained at a military facility.

Bobi Wine as he commonly known, the area’s lawmaker is being held at Makindye Barracks where he was remanded on Thursday by army court sitting in Gulu. The court adjourned the next hearing of his case to August 23, 2018.

The dancehall musician was charged with illegal possession of firearms and several rounds of ammunition.

Bobi Wine was arrested four days ago in Arua Municipality where he had camped canvassing support for his colleague Kassiano Wadri who had contested in a by-election. Kasiano Wadri is also detained at Arua Police Post. He won the by-election trouncing NRM’s Nusura Tiperu.

Bobi Wine and many other members of opposition are accused of leading an attack on the Presidential convoy in which one of the cars was damaged.

However, supporters of Bobi Wine have dispelled the charges as politically motivated.

Police has since deployed heavily in Bobi Wine’s constituency and made several arrests of those who are protesting.

A day before, similar clashes broke out in Kamwokya another suburb of Kampala where Bobi Wine has a support base owing to the his roots having grown up in the area.
