The Electoral Commission (EC) secretary Sam Rwakojo has commended security agencies particularly SFC for exhibiting professionalism on Monday evening following an attack on Presidential motorcade.
Rwakojo who Tuesday spoke to TrumpetNews as he travelled to Arua ahead of Wednesday by-election said, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s security unit should be praised for containing the situation after chaos broke out orchestrated by opposition supporters.
According to reports two people were shot dead including MP Robert Kyagulanyi’s driver Yusuf Kawooya.
Whereas Mr Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine rushed to break news of the death of his driver to attract sympathy, Presidential press secretary Mr. Don Wanyama later released pictures of a smashed car belonging to Museveni.
Its hind window was shattered by stones pelted at it by Bobi Wine’s fans in Arua.
Bobi Wine has camped in the areas canvassing support for independent candidate Mr. Kasiano Wadri who fell out with his former political party FDC.
Security officials on the ground told media outlets that supporters of Kasiano Wadri attempted to block Museveni’s convoy.
Mr. Wanyama earlier confirmed the President was in the convoy when the incident occurred, adding that he was ‘safe.’
Whereas Bobi Wine has previously drawn sympathy among public, Ugandans have since changed stance insisting it is suicidal for any citizen to block, attack or cause any harm to the President, “else where in the world, the President’s security can never be compromised.”
Whereas this act of impunity could have aroused a crisis that would result into several deaths, Museveni’s security contained the situation and ensured it didn’t slip into anarchy.
Against that backdrop, EC secretary Rwakojo says SFC deserves to be commended.
“They were professional, otherwise we would see more deaths,” said Rwakojo.
He added that commission’s top management was in Arua to investigate the source of the chaos. “What happened is unfortunate and regrettable that people were shot dead and the President’s convoy attacked. But security acted as professionals.”
Asked whether the commission intends to penalize those who masterminded the attack, Rwakojo insisted this wasn’t a solution.
The Arua Municipality by-election is slated for Wednesday.
The seat fell vacant after the assassination of area MP Ibrahim Abiriga in June this year.
