Arua By-Election Clashes; Bobi Wine Still Missing

Bobi Wine and Kasiano

Last evening, MP Robert Kyagulanyi’s (Bobi Wine) driver Yasin was shot dead by stray bullets as police attempted to disperse rowdy crowds that has attacked President Museveni’s convoy.

The shooting was police’s response to halt clashes between rivaling supporters of Kasiano Wadri who is being supported by Kyagulanyi and NRM’s Nusura Tiperu for the Arua Municipality MP seat by-election.

Bobi Wine was later arrested from his hotel together with other MPs including Gerald Karuhanga, and whisked away.

This morning, agitated fans of the Kyadondo East MP took to social media asking Police to produce their MP as he is reportedly being held at an unknown detention centre.

Statements from Bobi Wine’s camp say the MP is still missing and his phones switched off. We reproduce one of the statements from the camp;

As we speak, we have not heard from Hon. Bobi Wine as his phones are not reachable and security forces are not telling us if they arrested him or not.
Last night SFC soldiers and police arrested many of his (Bobi Wine’s) comrades including Hon. Zaake Francis, Hon. Gerald Karuhanga, Nyanzi Fred and candidate Kassiano Wadri. Many of those who were arrested were brutally beaten and are currently hospitalised.
The security forces launched a search and mounted road blocks everywhere and broke into all hotels where our comrades were suspected to be staying. They also vandalised all our vehicles and took away everything in those cars.
They are also still in possession of the body of our fallen brother. We don’t know when it will be handed to us so that we give him a decent send off.
Later, we shall come up with a statement on what exactly happened. For now we know that the shooting was a deliberate attempt on Bobi Wine’s life. We were marching peacefully back to our hotel from the rally when security forces opened fire, and one bullet went straight to the seat in the Tundra vehicle where Bobi normally sits.
Thank you all for the concern. Thank you all for the prayers. We shall keep you updated on what we gather.
