Busiro East County MP Medard Lubega Sseggona has been reportedly involved in a land grabbing scam in his constituency.
The family of a one Janet Namusisi who reside in Nsangi, Busiro in Wakiso district has petitioned Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to ruin over MP Sseggona, also an advocate with Lukwago & Co Advocates for ‘fleecing’ them their hard-earned money and failing to legal assistance in a case where their family is battling land grabbers.
“As you may be aware of rampant land grabbing in the country, my family’s ancestral land fell victim to this in October 2016. We were approached on 22nd Oct 2016 by Millennium Estates Developers Ltd, claiming ownership of our ‘kibanja’ land we have held for close to a century. We asked them to provide documents to prove their claim, but instead brought a grader the following day and destroyed everything on the land except the house and grave yard,” Namusisi said in her letter to the Speaker.
Consequently, Namusisi says that her family decided to seek help from the area MP-Sseggona who in turn provided them a lawyer (probono) from his firm, but the lawyer continued to frustrate the case without any strides. It is against this background that the aggrieved family decided to contact Sseggona who promised to handle the case if they paid him Shs3m which they eventually did.
“On 30th June 2017, Hon Sseggona asked for a total of Shs3m to handle the case himself. To our surprise he has been dodging us since then; we have never reached court nor secure an interim court order halting the actions of the trespassers,” the letter reads.
It adds, “On 3rd October 2017, I texted him asking for a refund of our money and the file so that we could seek assistance from another lawyer, but he never replied. The case has been like that since then. Last month after several attempts to get hold of him, he told us that he would return our files on his terms, and that he would not refund us a single coin, and yet that is all my family could raise.”
The family of Namusisi is now seeking assistance from Speaker Kadaga to summon DP’s Sseggona so that he refunds the money and also return the files since he has been of no help to the family.
Efforts to get Sseggona’s comment were futile as he did not pick our phone calls.
