Career and the positive attributes that come with the path are important aspects of nearly every Ugandan graduate’s life.
However, with the dwindling job market, and the continued desire by companies to want to employ personnel with experience, talent is being recycled around with little chance for new entrants.
Also, the choice of company to work for has always been an important factor in the decision to take the plunge in paid employment.
Talent Agenda Series, Africa’s human capital platform has released the list of 100 best companies to work for in Africa.
In Uganda, Uganda Breweries tops the list, followed by Digital TV providers Multi-Choice, Total and Shell following closely.
Other preferred employers include Unilever, Tullow Oil, The World Bank, Vodafone, Heineken, British American Tobbacco.
Citibank, KPMG, Standard Chartered Bank also made the list. Deloitte, SaBMiller and Coca Cola were also favorites among the best companies to work for.
Of 100 companies listed, the top five include the World Bank Group, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, African Development Bank and Microsoft.
Alex Mugan, Managing Director of the Global Career Company and co-author of the survey while commenting on the ranking, said the top attraction driver this year is the opportunity to learn new skills unlike impact as the key driver last year.
This is not a surprise. People are really interested in employers who develop them. They’re more interested in that within Africa than when you do comparative surveys elsewhere, with other examples around the globe.”
“So, it’s interesting to see that people investing in development is still an important factor for talent in Africa. Other things that have come to the fore this year include trusted senior leadership. It’s in the top three this year. That is where you are talking about leaders that listen; leaders that set a good ethical example; leaders that deliver the values of the business, and you can link that to people with interest in business with a purpose,” Mugan further indicated
Other Companies on the list included Barclays, Old Mutual, DHL, Vivo Energy and Airtel. ABB, Ecobank, MTN, Aga Khan, Lafarge, Stanbic Bank, Ericsson, PWC and Bollore also made the list of the top 100.
Some companies that have since ceased operations in Uganda appeared on the top 100 listing. Some of these include generated power suppliers Aggreko, Orange Telecom which sold out to Africell, SABMiller-the former owners of Nile Breweries, ENI which was among the first companies to jump onto Uganda’s oil trail.
