EC Issues Guidelines for Village women Committee Elections

Electoral commission starts off resident’s registration for local council elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has released a program for village women Committee polls slated for July 3rd 2018.

EC has called upon the public to carefully observe these guidelines in all villages in Uganda.

Below are the following guidelines stipulated by the Electoral Commission (EC);

Only women who are 18 years and above are eligible to vote at the station in the village where they are registered.

Polling shall take place in a public/open place within the village, and shall be by lining behind the candidates or their representatives or their portraits or symbols, in accordance with Section 111(2) of the Local Governments Act CAP 243 (as amended).

The Village Women Committee shall consist of the following members:  Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Publicity Secretary and Secretary for Finance. Polling for each office shall take place consecutively in that order.

The election shall be conducted between the hours of 9:00 am and 6:00 pm, and the following program shall guide the flow of activities on polling day: 9:00am-11:00am: Verification of voters by the Presiding Officer; 11:00am-11:30am: Briefing of voters on voting procedures by the Presiding Officer; 11:30am-2:30pm: Voting by the electorate lining up and counting of votes; 2:30pm-6:00pm: Filling of Forms and Declaration of Results.

The Village Election Officer (presiding officer) shall record the number of votes counted in the line for each candidate and for each office and declare the candidate who has obtained the largest number of votes the winner for the office.
