How Top Media Houses, Journalists Goofed on Kayihura Arrest

Kayihura

On Tuesday night, a section of Ugandan, partly, the social media enthusiasts spent the better part discussing the arrest of former police chief Gen Kale Kayihura.

According to reports, Kayihura had been picked from Courtyard Hotel in Lyantonde after an operation launched by the military.

Senior journalists including Independent Magazine CEO Mr. Andrew Mwenda who commands a huge following on social media took to his twitter page to confirm the arrest.

Mwenda had been a close ally of Kayihura at a time he was at the helm of the police establishment.

A number of Ugandans, copied and pasted Mwenda’s statement while others retweeted confirming the breaking news.

NBSTV, which has currently cut its niche as the leading television in the land used its Twitter page to also announce the arrest and how the General has been taken to Officer’s Mess in Kololo, Kampala.

Also a top Kampala based radio station Capital FM confirmed the arrest using its twitter handle.

Another credible and prominent newspaper The Observer, published a detailed article indicating that Kayihura’s arrest was sanctioned by President Yowori Kaguta Museveni who had been pressured by United Nations.

The Observer story links Kayihura to several kidnaps and murders of refugees from Rwanda.

Late last year senior police officers under the command of Kayihura were arrested by Military Intelligence on allegations that they kidnapped and repatriated Rwandan refugees, which angered UN officials.

The same officers were linked to the several assassinations of prominent Ugandans including AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi who was gunned down last year in March.

These officers until today are battling charges in Military Court.

It remains unconvincing how all these crimes were committed without the knowledge of Kayihura.

I am Free

But on Wednesday Morning Kayihura scoffed at those peddling lies on social media saying he was at his farm in Kasagama where he is engaged in commercial farming since he was relieved of his duties.

He however, acknowledged that like any other Ugandan he can be arrested, “even if I am arrested, am I the first to be,” he was quoted as saying.

Reports further have it that on Tuesday a chopper carrying UPDF joint chief of staff Maj Gen Wilson Mbadi briefly landed at Kayihura’s Kasagama farm after developing a mechanical problem.

But this website couldn’t substantiate this information.

It is also reported that Kayihura is due to meet the army commander General David Muhoozi.
