Former Army Commander General Mugisha Muntu has this afternoon issued a statement in which he urged Ugandans to cease politicizing the Late Abiriga’s death.
The retired General said the killing of the Arua Municipality MP was executed in a similar manner with other high profile killings that included that of former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi and former State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi.
Muntu said in his statement said the state of insecurity cut across all sections of society and was not being orchestrated by the Opposition or figures related to other Political Parties.
TrumpetNews reproduces the FDC honcho’s statement as released this afternoon.
As Hon. Abiriga is laid to rest today, it is important that we as a country take stock of where we are and how we have arrived at this point. Many people have already made conclusions about why the late MP and his brother, Saidi Butele were murdered. It is important that we allow for facts to bear themselves out rather than act based on speculation. Here’s what we know:
- The style in which they were killed is consistent with several previous high profile murders: Joan Kagezi, Felix Kaweesi and several muslim clerics
- The murder comes at a time when fatal kidnaps, raping & robberies are on the rise nationwide
- Insecurity is not partisan
Because an insecure Uganda affects us all, it is important that we all work towards ensuring that these kind of murders (or the angry backlash that follows) do not become our way of dealing with political, social or financial differences as a country. No one wins like this.
I therefore appeal to Ugandans to avoid politicising these deaths. When we allow ourselves to engage in a ‘we vs them’ war, we will find ourselves in a zero-some war in which Uganda is burnt to ashes and no one wins. We are better than that.
