Opinion: Beyond Hon Betty Amongi

Amongi appearing before the Lands Commission

By Agaba Ronald Bills

I’m watching the minister of lands sweating to explain how she acquired 5 prime properties worth billions in a space of 1year, you see guys, Hon. Amongi may not be a thief by birth but like all humans, she’s attempting to belong.

The sense of belonging to a system of governance where leaders have made impunity and wealth accumulation primary and service to the country secondary.

If Hon. Amongi was sacked today, which I doubt, she would have secured her great grand children’s future . ( she said, ” what’s 200m to me” )

All our leaders seem to be on a mission of securing their families amidst what they perceive to be a sinking Uganda.

The reason I doubt her sacking is buttressed by the practice of the appointing authority.

Not long ago, we watched with bated breath as Hon. Karuhanga then youth MP presented bank statements of bribes received by cabinet ministers and nothing came out of it.

Recently we had press reports about a certain powerful minister who’s on the wanted list in America over soliciting and receiving bribes but neither government nor the said individual feels that we the people deserve an explanation.

As Hon Amongi sweats over stolen properties, many leaders are having loud sex in properties acquired via the same or worse means.

Somebody said ” Ugandans forget so fast” this is the most “stupid” school of thought advanced by the powerful and their handlers as they massage their loot appetite, people, don’t be fooled.

Ugandans are wise people. Go back to Rt Hon Mbabazi’s counsel, he said and I quote “knowledge is knowing what to say and wisdom is knowing when to say it”

So, Ugandans know. They know all thieves. They know those who have abused power. They know those who have stolen land. They know those who have given jobs based on ethnicity and sex. Ugandans are wise to know when to act.

The point I’m making is that the more those with power misuse it, the more they endanger peaceful transition. Nobody will convince Ugandans that “let us move on”

We can sit and gross over abuse of power but the danger with it is that abates anger and revenge, so when M7 finally leaves ( and surely he will) instead of moving on the masses descend into revenge.
