Hundreds of Col Kizza Besigye’s radical supporters on Wednesday marched in Rukungiri town, waving placards, shouting and singing opposition slogans as they accompanied FDC candidate Betty Muzanira to be nominated by Electoral Commission (EC).
Besigye and a couple of opposition leaders mostly from FDC are in Rukungiri to canvass support for Muzanira who faces stiff competition from ruling party candidate Winfred Matsiko.
EC set election date on May 31, 2018.
Rukungiri Woman MP seat fell vacant last month when Court threw Winfred out of Parliament citing several electoral malpractices.
Betty Muzanira in 2016 lost to Winfred but challenged the results in the Courts of Law.
Late last month, President Yoweri Museveni toured Rukungiri Town and donated an assortment of goods and cash worth shs 5 billion to local SACCOs.
But Besigye his allies interpreted the donation as a bribe ahead of the upcoming by-election.
Rukungiri is Besigye’s native home.
As campaigns begin today, this by-election is expected to be fierce as country’s two political heavyweights (Besigye and Museveni) faceoff in what many describe as ‘contest of egos.’
