Fallen Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza

Burundi has kicked off the official campaign for referendum on constitutional amendment.

The process has seen 26 political parties and one individual (independent) involved in the campaign which will see voting take place on May 17.

The campaign is transparent because of opposition FRODEBU of LonceNgendakumana and the coalition of AMIZERO y’a Barundi are participating.

More than five million people have signed up to vote, the Independent National Electoral Commission head Ceni Ndayicariye says.

“The government has not even officially communicated to us the draft of the revised constitution so that we can examine it and know for sure which text will be submitted for public approval or disapproval,” Georges Nikiza, the spokesman for the National Rally for Change, RANAC, told AFP.
