Opposition heavyweight Col Kizza Besigye has openly regretted treating the man he now strongly opposes during the bush war that ushered in the NRM government.
Besigye was a personal physician of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as they fought to depose Milton Obote’s government in the 80s.
After capturing power, Besigye served in different capacities as minister, army political commissar and also a member of the Constituency Assembly before he fell out with the regime in 1999 after he authored a dossier that was deemed detrimental to government.
He thus fled into exile in South Africa and returned in 2001 to contest for President.
Besigye has since earned himself a position as the all-time rival of Museveni, and the most powerful opposition leader in the land.
On Thursday while addressing a rally in Western Uganda he told supporters gathered in Bugamba, Rwampara District that it’s his efforts that Museveni is still alive.
“Had I not treated him, he would be no more,” said Besigye who again wondered why Museveni would now oppress the people of Uganda.
Besigye was accompanied by FDC party president Mr Patrick Amuriat, secretary for mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe, Buhweju lawmaker Francis Mwijuky, Kawempe South legislator Mubarak Munywagwa and other party officials.
They were attending a ceremony in which former area MP Vicent Kyamadidi was being welcomed to FDC.
Early this year Kyamadidi an outspoken member of the ruling party crossed to FDC after suffering election defeat in 2016.
He earlier shot to limelight as a party rebel MP who internally opposed the bad governance of his party.
Besigye applauded Kyamadidi for joining the struggle against the regime.
The function ended prematurely as Police cordoned off the area saying the rally was illegal.
