MP Onesmus: I didn’t Mean Spousal Abuse but ‘Bedroom Beating’

Apologetic; Onesmus

Bugangaizi East County legislator Onesmus Twinamasiko has come out to retract statements that aroused public uproar in which he espoused domestic violence.

Onesmus was quoted criticising President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni who on March 8, 2018, while presiding over Women’s day celebrations in Mityana condemned men who beat up their wives, the President termed as cowards, foolish.

But to Onesmus, Museveni was wrong, “a woman deserves to be disciplined, beaten and put her in line,”

Little did Onesmus know that his comments would draw  ire among members of the public, fellow MPs and rights activists who demanded that the MP be reprimanded in any case suspended from Parliament.

On Tuesday, the deputy speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Jacob Oulanyah told the August House that Onesmus would issue his statement later Wednesday.

“The beating I meant was not the normal beating.  I meant the ‘other’ beating,” Onesmus Twinamasiko who recently endorsed wife beating said in defence.

Onesmus apologised to fellow members and the general public and in particular women. “I detest all forms of violence against women. Kindly accept my sincere and reserved apologies.”
