Mozey Radio: The super talented rowdy artiste whose star dimmed at its peak

It is a sad day for music in Uganda. Mozey Radio, real name Moses Ssekibogo Nakintije aka Music General, Ki Radiology is gone.

He passed away this Thursday morning at Case Clinic in Kampala after undergoing two major operations that were meant to save his life.

What started off as slight fall at a bar brawl at DE Bar in Entebbe last week turned fatal, then death.

Together with his music brother, Weasel under the GoodLyfe dynamic duo label, the Radio & Weasel brand came from nothing to become one of the most sought after music duos across Africa.

Just last year, the duo celebrated 10 years of RAW – Radio and Weasel at a successful concert held at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.

With no doubt, in one decade, the duo had cemented its position as not only one of Uganda’s best but East Africa’s best music duo and also among Africa’s top 5 music groups.

His Journey

At the time of his death, Mozey was in his mid-30s but with a musical journey that was far bigger than most of his older comrades.

Radio started off under the tutelage of Jose Chameleon of Leone Island Music Empire as a back-up singer in the early 2000s.

His first sale out single was dubbed Sweet Lady.

In 2007, Radio together with Jose Chameleon’s young brother Weasel broke away from Leone Island citing frustration and desire to pursue their careers without Chameleon’s meddling.

Together with Jose Chameleone’s former manager, Jeff Kiwa, they formed the GoodLyfe crew with the lead artistes being Moses Radio and Weasel Manizo.

Indeed Good Life

The duo registered immediate success as they went on to release more than 50 hits songs within a span of 6 years.

Their first biggest songs included Nakudata, Lwaki Onumya, Zuena, Nyambura, Bread and Butter, Nyumbani, Chamila, and Kuku and many more.

But while they enjoyed immediate unprecedented success, they also made more news for very wrong reasons.

Their success and good works were undone by their involvement in endless verbal & physical fights, booze & drugs misuse, women and internal wrangles.

This though never affected their music.

In 2013, they were nominated in the BET Awards in the category of Best International Act: Africa. They appeared in this category alongside 2Face Idibia (Nigeria), Toya Delazy (South Africa), Donald (South Africa), Ice Prince (Nigeria) and R2Bees (Ghana).

They lost the award to Ice prince but this nomination at this global stage alone further proved that the Goodlyfe boys had cemented their position among Africa’s music giants.

The downfall begins

Following their return from BET, Radio and Weasel were embroiled in more controversy and the internal disagreements at GoodLyfe crew reached a break point.

Consequently, in 2014, they officially broke up with their management. Radio and Weasel remained with the Goodlyfe brand while their managers who happen to be blood brothers – Jeff and Allan Kiwa formed another group named Team No Sleep (TNS).

At the time of this break up, Radio and Weasel accused their managers of witchcraft and underhand activities intended to sabotage the group’s success.

RIP

They then hired their close friend from the Leone Island days, Chagga as their manager, assisted by Lawrence Labeja, the former manager of another music star also Member of Parliament Bobi Wine.

Under the rebranded Goodlyfe, Radio took over as the final decision maker, with Weasel, the second in command. Their management now worked on clear orders and instructions from the two artistes. But Radio had the final say.

After 2014, Radio and Weasel’s biggest song was Neera, a song fully voiced by Radio with Weasel only featuring in the video.

However, the two continued to work on joint projects which equally worked well on the market. In 2017, they collaborated with B2C – another music group made up of 3 musicians and released Gutamiza.

Written by Moses Radio, the song went on to become one of the biggest songs of 2017.Todate, it is still rocking.

In the same year, they did a remix of Home to Africa remix with South African star PJ Powers. Both PJ Powers and Nigerian Icon Wizkid were expected in Uganda this week to check on Moses Radio at Case Clinic.

Live by the sword, die by the sword

A graduate of Makerere University where he earned a degree is Psychology, Mozey was probably one of the few Ugandan artists who actually made it to university.

Mozey was a fighter, musically and physically. He had a penchant for the bitter, and just like everyone who drinks, his small frame was never a deterrent of him throwing a punch when “high”.

Weasle saddened by Radio’s demise

His alleged endless fights had reached nauseating levels and at some point he was expected to stop, but no.

How Radio had defied size to ‘beat up people’ is as baffling as his resolve not to stop fighting, to a point that he could probably be alive it weren’t for his endless fights.

It is that part of Radio that the music loving public loathed about him and even made it hard like his presence in a bar knowing that he could throw the next bottle when rattled.
At the time of his death, Radio has left behind several unreleased local and international projects.

In the next few days, we shall be able to find out the total number of children and widows he has left behind.
