In a bid to consider employing local experts in the Oil and Gas Sector, the Ministry of Education and Sports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Victoria University to train Ugandans to work in the industry.
The need for local content is part of the component agreed upon by the Government and Oil Companies.
The Education Ministry Permanent Secretary Alex Kakooza told journalists on Monday that failure to provide Ugandans experts to work in the sector will compel the Oil Companies to ‘import’ foreign labour.
In order to scale up training for Oil Industry, the Ministry has thus contracted UK based Coventry University and Victoria University owned by businessman Sudhir Ruparelia to provide extra training to instructors at Kikywamba Technical College one of the centres of excellence in oil related trainings in Uganda.
TrumpetNews understands that one of the roles for these Universities is to award certificates for the courses undertaken having ensured the training is on international standards.
The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry’s head offices in Kampala.
“These Universities will help us train people who will work in the Oil Industry. Because while signing the agreement with the companies there is a component that they must employ majority staff as Ugandans. If we don’t then these firms will bring their own stuff,” Kakooza said.
