Red Pepper directors, editors charged with treason

Monday was a sad day for the media fraternity in Uganda after Buganda Road Court charged Red Pepper bosses with 7 counts and sent them to Luzira prison until December 5.

Five directors who include James Mujuni, Richard Tusiime, Johnson Musinguzi, Rugyendo Arinaitwe and Patrick Mugumya were arraigned in Court on Tuesday alongside three editors; Ben Byarabaha, Richard Kintu and Francis Tumusiime.

The 7 counts which include; publication of information prejudicial to national security, criminal libel,  offensive communication among others.

They were denied bail and remanded to Luzira until December 5.

They were arrested last Tuesday from Red Pepper offices in Namanve, Mukono District after operatives from Counter-Terrorism Unit of Police besieged the premises.

Since then the premises have been closed as a scene of crime.

They have been in Nalufenya detention centre in Eastern Uganda.

The arrest came after publication of a story alleging that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is planning to topple his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame.
