Ibanda Nurse dies as gov’t funds for her cancer treatment in India delay

Juderine Kasingye, 27, a nurse at Health Centre Three at Bufunda Parish in Ibanda District on Monday Night succumbed to liver failure caused by Cancer (Hepatic Cancer) at Case Clinic in Kampala.

Juderine was supposed to be travelling to India this week for liver transplant.

Born to John Rubasimbira and Evangelista Kyakuhaire of  Ruhiga Village in Kantozi in Kicheche Sub-County, not so much is known about her educational background but made a name out of treating residents in Ibanda town.

Until 2 years ago when she was diagnosed with hepatic cancer.

She endured the pain but early this year her situation worsened and medics at Mulago where she was seeking treatment advised for a transplant in India.

Juderine required shs 120 million to have a second chance in life.

Hope

Her family and relatives led by Immaculate Rubasimbira (sister) started a campaign on social media to raise funds and have her flown to India.

Whereas the money raised wasn’t enough, authorities at Ibanda District Local Government through the line Ministry Line Local Government requested Finance Ministry in August for remaining shs 76 million.

The Ministry approved the request to send the money to Ibanda Local Government to see her travel to India.

Delay

A relative who asked not to be mentioned expressed disappointment in government programmes especially at a point where there are no emergency offices to handle such special cases like that of Juderine.

Towards the end of August, her health deteriorated yet the process of wiring money on the account was still unfinished.

“As we followed up we were told that the request was on a different vote so it had to be rectified. All those days were impatiently waiting,” said a relative.

Juderine who was seeking treatment at Mulago was transferred to Kiruddu Hospital.

Hope gone

On October 31, Ministry of Finance managed to send the money to authorities in Ibanda District.

To their consternation, the relatives were told officials at Finance Ministry erred by wiring the cash to an account of Ibanda Municipality instead of Local Government.

“Our backs were broken. All this happened as lots hope whether she would be alive by the time this predicament is corrected,” a relative added.

Over the weekend the family received communication that finally money had been sent and just this week Juderine would be flown to India.

She lost the battle Monday.

Ibanda Town Clerke Justine Baryakaijuka when reached acknowledged that the District officials requested for the money but with government “thing go through a process.”

“It is sad we lost a nurse at such an age who would have helped many of us. My office hadn’t received the money. So the best people to ask are those of Finance,” she said.

Asked if she is aware the money bounced because it was wrongly wired on a different account of the district, Justine denied having any knowledge.

Some of the deceased’s close family members suggested that may government officials deliberately delayed this money to embezzle it.

This website was unable to reach officials in charge at Finance Ministry.

It remains unclear whether her family will claim  this money.

Burial arrangements are on going.
