The Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended Local Council (LC) elections following an injunction stopping the process issued by High Courts in Kampala and Jinja on Monday afternoon.
The Electoral Commission Chairman Justice Simon Byabakama held a news briefing at the headquarter in Kampala and informed the general public that the elections for Village Women Councils and Committees and Elections for Administrative Units (LC I & LC II) shall not be held as earlier scheduled.
“Accordingly, the elections of Village Women Councils and Committees scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday 14th November 2017 shall not take place,” said Byabakama.
“Similarly, the electoral programme for election of Administrative Units (LC I & LC II) is suspended.”
He concluded that any further steps by the Commission on the above electoral activities will be determined by the outcome of the Court process, of which the public will be informed.
High Court’s Justice Jesse Byaruhanga Rugyema issued the injunction following an application filed by a citizen named Allan Alibawani.
The ruling was issued in the absence of the Electoral Commission lawyers, who according to the judge were duly served but failed to turn up.
The judge ordered the Commission along with all its agents and servants to restrain from conducting the elections, until the main application challenging the exercise is determined. The injunction is to stand for the next 60 days.
