City Hall Court has Monday charged Investigator News Editor Stanley Ndawula for disturbing Gen Kale Kayihura’s peace and granted him bail.
Earlier the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mike Chibita had sanctioned charges against JournalistStanley Ndawula and his brother Robert Ndawula.
The two have been in police detention since late last week, following an article published on the news website about Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura.
According to the chargesheet the duo were accused of having an intent to defame the IGP in an article in which it was purported that the police boss was murdering his own officers.
The article was titled “Civil Rights Activist Pens Down an Open Letter to Gen Kayihura Every Uganda Should Read.”
In the said open letter, it was alleged that Gen Kayihura had “resorted to killing his own police officers as a way of covering his crimes.”
“Police say the story was false and that it caused hatred, ridicule, contempt and damaged the reputation of the IGP.
Robert Ndawula on the other hand is being accused of disturbing Kayihura’s peace and privacy by posting stories on Facebook that the latter had been arrested and his house cordoned off by the military.
The duo is being charged following pressure from fellow journalists under the Online Media Publishers Association (OMPA) who protested the manner in which their case was being handled and called for their release.
