Uganda’s powerful opposition leader Col Kizza Besigye has Wednesday morning appeared at Rukungiri Chief Magistrates Court to answer murder charges.

His appearance comes after Court ordered police to produce Besigye who had been incacerated in Naggalama Police Station in Mukono District on Tuesday.

Besigye faces the charges with other two; FDC Secretary for Mobilization Ingrid Turinawe and party presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi.

According to FDC councillor Doreen Nyanjura, Police cordoned off Court premises and a few people were allowed to access the Court room.

Police operation at Rukungiri Court was commanded by Flying Squad boss Herbert Muhangi.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mike Chibita sanctioned murder charges against Besigye together with FDC party Presidential aspirant John Patrick Amuriat, FDC chief mobilizer Ingrid Turinawe and councilor Innocent Tashobya for allegedly murdering one Edison Nasasira 22, a resident of Rujumbura constituency in Rukungiri.

The incident occurred last week during a political rally in Rukungiri district when commotion ensued after Police fired teargas and live ammunition to disperse a crowd of
opposition supporters in Rukungiri stadium.

Police had blocked Besigye from accessing the stadium for age limit consultation rally organised by area MP Roland Kaginda.
