EC sets dates for By-election of MP for Igara East Constituency, Bushenyi District

Andrew Martial, Igara East MP contestant who will be vying for his seat in the December By-Election

The Electoral Commission has approved the electoral programme for by-election of Member of Parliament for Igara East Constituency, Bushenyi District.
The Igara East seat fell vacant when the Court of Appeal nullified the election of former MP, Andrew Martial, on 3rd October 2017.

The Court of Appeal in Kampala threw out of parliament Igara County East MP, Andrew Martial over electoral irregularities.

In their unanimous decision, Justices Egoda Ntende, Richard Buteera and Deputy Chief justice Owiny Odollo said the elections were marred with irregularities in the voting and tallying which affected the final results in the substantial manner.

The programme will commence with an update of the National Voters’ Register from 30th October to 3rd November 2017, at update stations in each of the twenty seven (27) parishes in Igara East Constituency.
The Commission has also appointed Friday 3rd November 2017 as the cut-off date for registration of voters in the district. Registration and transfer of voters from one polling station to another within Igara East Constituency will not be conducted after this date.
The display of Voters’ Register will be conducted from 13th to 22nd November 2017, at all the polling stations in Igara East Constituency, while nominations will be conducted on 22nd and 23rd November 2017.
Campaigns will be held from 26th November to 12th December 2017 and polling will be on 14th December 2017.
During the 2016 elections, Andrew Martial got 15983 votes while Michael Mawanda got 15091.
