President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has sought to conduct secret talks with ruling party legislators opposed to constitution amendment bill in an effort to convince them to support removal of age limit law.
These lawmakers were last Friday ejected from the caucus meeting by the NRM chairman.
They include; Theodore Ssekikubo (Lwemiyaga), Mohammad Nsereko (Kampala Central), Barnabas Tinkasimiire (Buwaga West), Wilfred Nuwagaba (Ndorwa East), John Baptist Nambeshe (Manjiya County), Gaffa Mbwatekamwa (Kasambya County), Patrick Nsamba (Kassanda County), Sylvia Rwabwogo (Kabarole District) and James Acidiri (Maracha East).
Unlike other party MPs, the 9 have openly said that they don’t subscribe to scrapping of age cap, a move the public view as a plan to have Museveni rule for life.
However, Museveni told the caucus that removal of age limit law is his initiative.
TrumpetNews has reliably learnt that Museveni has sent his aides to reach out to these dissenting lawmakers to change their mindset.
“Museveni will personally meet them and ask them why they are against his project. But for now we are trying to reach to them,” a source who preferred to anonymity said.
Adding that soon they will have a one on one with the NRM principal.
A source declined to divulge more details.
Presidential spokesman Don Wanyama when asked responded, “if the talks are secret, how would I know? I am not aware of the said talks.”
Speaking to this website Kabarole District Woman MP Sylvia Rwabwogo said that she isn’t aware of any secret nor has anyone reached out to her to secretly meet the President.
She admitted that she would meet Museveni and air out her views if she got audience with him.
“When they were throwing us out of the caucus, the President said he will meet us alone and we are still waiting,” she said.
“But there is nothing secret we prefer open talks where we will defend our position on why we are against amending the constitution.”
Asked if she would maintain her stance even when she meets the President who refers to removal of age limit as my thing, Rwabwogo said her job is to defend the constitution.
The regime’s plans to scrap the age cap have been hit with hostility from the electorate that insist Museveni should retire after this term.
