The Regional Police Spokesman for Kigezi Elly Matte has said that the unidentified youth was hit by a stone which killed him instantly.
He refuted earlier reports that the youngster was shot at my police after a scuffle erupted as protesters battled security in Rukungiri Town.
Rukungiri Municipality legislator Hon Rowland Kaginda announced that he would hold a rally in the Stadium to consult the electorate on the controversial age limit debate.
However, Police attempted to foil the rally having learnt that Kaginda was accompanied by the main opposition leader Col Kizza Besigye and FDC Secretary for Mobilisation Ingrid Turinawe who both hail from the area.
Running battles ensued between operatives and supporters of Besigye donned ‘Red Ribbons’ a symbol of an awareness against the age limit removal.
Police was compelled to fire live bullets and teargas to disperse the rowdy and charged crowds.
Police first blocked Besigye’s vehicle from accessing Rukungiri town, prompting him to proceed on foot together with his supporters as surging sea of supporters flanked him.
Matte further said that only one person was killed unlike what we reported earlier that the second protester died while he was being rushed to Nyakibale Hospital.
However opposition leaders in Rukungiri insist the number of those shot at is more than one.
Matte added that the charged crowds pelted stones at senior officers thus injuring Kigezi Region RPC Denis Namuwoza and the liaison officer.
