USA warns government on arresting state opponents, raiding NGOs over age limit

Ambassador Malac

American government has asked President Museveni’s administration to guarantee the people of Uganda freedom of speech, expression and assembly without fear of intimidation.

According to a statement issued by the US ambassador Deborah Malac, her government is deeply concerned by the arrests and raids that stifle the people’s rights and tarnishes Uganda’s image globally.

Malac’s statement

“We are disturbed by reports of raids on NGOs. Infringements on protected rights under Uganda’s constitution will impede the country’s developments,”  Malac wrote.

On Wednesday, security apparatus raided a number of NGOs and their heads searching for unknown documents.

Reports indicate that security had been tipped that these NGOs had received illicit funds to finance radical opposition politicians to cause anarchy over proposed constitutional review.

The country remains on tension as ruling party MPs prepare to pass the age limit bill.
