Parliament cautions BoU to drop Mpanga, Masembe as its lawyers

Mpanga and Masembe

Parliamentary Committee on Commissions Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) has issued a stern warning to the Central Bank authorities to immediately drop

MMAKS and AF Mpanga advocates as the legal officers.

Appearing before the Katuntu led committee on Tuesday at Parliament Bank of Uganda (BoU) Governor Emmanuel Mutebile and the Legal Team Director Margret Kasule were grilled how they extravagantly spent shs 3 billion on external lawyers.

COSASE chairman Hon Abdul Katuntu told BoU officials that they must get their own internal legal representatives instead of spending taxpayers money on such lawyers.

It emerged that David Mpanga and Masembe Kanyerezi asked shs 3b as legal fees to represent BoU in a legal battle against businessman Sudhir Ruparelia in which he is accused of causing a financial loss to defunct Crane Bank of shs 400 billion.

However, the accused sued the lawyers citing conflict of conflict because Mpanga and Masembe were his lawyers.

Although at first the duo first denied representing Sudhir, Justice Wangutusi set the 14th of  November to deliver his ruling on whether lawyers Timothy Masembe Kanyerezi and David Mpanga should stand down from representing Crane Bank and Bank of Uganda against Sudhir Ruparelia.
