Exclusive: 6 police bosses arrested for stealing posho, beans

Police directorate- Professional Standards Unit (PSU) has arrested and detained six officers for misuse of office and theft.

The officers in cells include; ASP Shepherd Mwesigwa, the logistic officer attached to Rwenzori Region, ASP Harriet Kenyena the officer in charge criminal investigations department Nsangi police station, D/SGT Anena Beatrice, CPL Opio Alex, Nelson Nuwanmanya , and one Joseph Katerega all investigators attached to Kilimanya police post in Makindye division.

PSU publicist Vicente Sekate told this website at the headquarters that the six officers were arrested after getting intelligence information that they had committed different crimes in different stations.

Sekate added that ASP Shepherd Mwesigwa was arrested on allegations of abuse of office and theft of police posho and beans worth shs 5.4M.

He explained that Mwesigwa signed for 71 bags of posho and 35 bags of beans at Namanve logistic stores which were destined for various field for police detaches in the Rwenzori region.

On reaching Fort Portal the officer is reported to have sold 24 bags of posho and 12 bags of beans.

He further revealed that ASP Harriet Kenyena was arrested on allegations of unlawful detention of a one Onen Calvin a student of Kisubi Technical Institute and extortion of shs 2M while handling defilement case.

He also noted that a medical report had indicated that the defilement victim had not been defiled but the officer insisted and demanded for money from the suspects where they paid shs 2M .

It is indicted that on 10th August 2017, the victims Nakibubbu Hollice and her younger sister Hoga Nabaterega escaped from their home in Nsangi on allegation of mistreatment by their mother one Maureen Zimbe .

They were later found in Lubowa Estates stranded and crying by one Onen Calvin a resident of the same place who offered to them assistance of food and accommodation ..The following day Onen and his sister one Agoosa Pauline offered their phones to the girls to inform their relatives of their where about but were instead arrested for defilement and procuring defilement respectively.

Sekate said that the following day, the victims’ mother with the help of Kenyena demanded for money worth shs2.5M with menaces which the complainants paid to gain their freedom.

Sekate further revealed that the other officers attached to Kilimanyaga police post tortured a suspect identified as Wilson Tibesigwa who was arrested on allegations of theft.

It is also reported that on 25th August 2017 Tibwesigwa while in his sugar cane plantation, police from Kilimanyaga police post arrested and tortured him leading to loss of one of his eyes in the hospital.

The police spokesperson stressed that the suspects later connived with the complainant and demanded shs 200,000 from Tibesigwa in order to give him a police bond.

“All the six police officers are still held in our police custody and their files are being worked on pending to be charged criminally in the anti-corruption court”. Sekate said.
