The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that FDC candidate Apollo Kantinti will not cast his vote on Thursday.
Earlier reports had indicated that Kantinti wasn’t an eligible voter of Kyadondo East since he had registered in Mukono district.
EC spokesman Jotham Taremwa when contacted about Kantinti’s fate he said, “I wonder why Katinti did not apply to transfer during the update of the voters register for Kyadondo East.”
Paul Bukenya, Jotham’s deputy added that, I think the law is clear and okay; the EC provided opportunity for eligible persons to update their voting particulars in preparation for this by-election. If a person does not take advantage f the transfer window, then surely the problem is not the law.”
He further explained that the requirement for nomination as a candidate for MP is that you must be a registered voter, and not necessarily in the particular constituency where one wants to stand. So a person can stand and in case of victory, represent a constituency where he is not registered as a voter.
His clarification was premised on grounds that it wouldn’t attract legal implications in case Kantinti won the election.
