The Uganda police have arrested and detained a Ugandan national aged 40 after he was put on the Interpol Red Notice on the request of the US authorities.
Dan Tumusiime was arrested on Wednesday for a crime he committed in a Care Home in Michigan, USA, in 2012.
His relatives however, told this website that they have failed to access Tumusiime who is believed to be at Jinja Road Police Station.
“We were told he is detained at Jinja road but he is not there,” a relative said.
Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokeman Emillian Kayima when reached said that the relatives should first check records as to whether Tumusiime is being detained at Jinja road police station
Tumusiime who looks responsible at first sight is said to have raped the woman she was supposed to be taking care of.
He was arrested on Wednesday in Mukono District after a tip off by locals who knew him so well.
Vicent Ssekate, the spokesman of the Directorate of Interpol told crime reporters that Tumusiime is being detained at Jinja Road Police Station in Kampala.
Ssekate added that the suspect will be extradited to the US to face the rape allegations.
He explained how Tumusiime was arrested and how Interpol works.
“We are a member of Interpol and one of our commitments to the treaty is to help other member states find criminals that are on the run from the law,” Ssekate said.
He added that although Tumusiime is a Ugandan, he will be handed over to another country since he didn’t commit the crime in Uganda.
The rape
According to Interpol, Tumusiime was working in a Care Home for the elderly and that in the month of March 2012, he entered the woman’s room while she was asleep and went ahead to forcefully have sex with her.
The documents from Interpol and seen by TrumpetNews indicate that the suspect undressed the old woman and went ahead to engage in sexual acts with her.
Although the elderly woman ran to the authorities for justice, there was no incriminating evidence to pin Tumusiime.
Tumusiime was then deported to Uganda pending investigations into the matter.
Conclusive evidence
Although Tumusiime was deported to his country, authorities did not stop investigating the case to ensure justice for the old lady.
Ssekate said that forensic investigations on the exhibits they found on the bed where Tumusiime raped the victim were conducted and the DNA result matched with Tumusiime’s DNA.
Ssekate added that after that milestone, the US authorities started criminal proceedings against Tumusiime although he had left the US.
It is at this point that the US Justice Department then sought the help of the Uganda Police through Interpol to have Tumusiime arrested and charged for his heinous acts on the old lady.
