Col Kizza Besigye on Wednesday made a surprise visit to Acholi Paramount Chief Rwot David Omen Achana and the two leaders held a closed door meeting on how to end the land skirmishes which are ripping apart parts of northern Uganda.
The clashes began last week with Madi tribe from Juka in Adjumani district pitting against Acholi in Apaa, Amuru district.
Security agencies led by police are yet to restore sanity as several high ranking government officials are struggling to contain the situation.
Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda flanked by Lands Minister Betty Amongi visited the area and promised to end the conflict.
According to Ronald Muhinda, Besigye’s press secretary, the FDC heavyweight expressed his fears about the threat of land grabbing that would in future make Acholi people homeless.
“He engaged the Paramount Chief about the need to mobilise and sensitise his subjects on the problem before them, warning that he might in future have subjects that are homeless on their own land. His Majesty was particularly concerned,” Muhinda said.
Earlier Besigye had addressed a press conference at Media centre in Gulu.
“His focus was again land grabbing. Besigye, seemingly worried and frustrated that Acholi leaders were not doing enough to address the potential threat of land grabbing, warned that Mr. Museveni and his group had concluded plans to grab Acholi land,” Muhinda added.
Besigye issued a four point policy document on how land matters and transactions should be handled in Acholi. The document and fliers, printed in Luo and English, were distributed to Acholi leaders present with instructions to distribute them to ordinary people for them to understand their land rights.
Recently Besigye and his faction of activists launched a campaign dubbed My Land My Life.
The land issue in Uganda is increasingly becoming national security threat.
