Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Secretary General Fred Ebil has described today’s meeting held at Uganda House as ‘normal and small’ contrary to earlier media reports which portrayed it as urgent cabinet sitting.
The online news sites suggested that party president Hon Jimmy Akena through his junior Michael Osinde Orachi had sent invites to all cabinet members urging them to attend the meeting without fail, as the matter to be discussed needed very urgent intervention.
But Ebil, speaking to this website acknowledged a meeting took place today but it was small and only tackled usual matters or re-organising their ‘cracked’ political party.
“We sat with the party president and looked through a few issues including how to source for finances and also plan for this party,” he said.
Ebil said that UPC is strategically positioning itself to compete for the president in 2021.
UPC, an opposition party which has been in government twice has in the recent years failed to reclaim its supremacy after the demise of the revered founder Dr Apollo Milton Obote.
The party started developing cracks with different cliques fighting for the president’s seat on 6 floor of Uganda House.
Last year the party didn’t participate in the Presidential contest but rather weighed in on the ruling party candidate Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Turbulence has further erupted in the main stream party led by Jimmy Akena and last week Chief Administrative Secretary, Higenyi Kemba was allegedly suspended by Fred Ebil over the misconduct of some staff members that expressed high levels of gross indiscipline.
