The ruling NRM candidate Hajjat Rehema Watongola has overwhelmingly defeated her rival Salaam Musumba to retain Kamuli Municipality MP seat.
The FDC bigwig lost last year’s election to the same person but contested her academic papers in Courts of law.
Court ruled by nullifying Watongola’s victory and immediately ordered for a by-election.
But the NRM honcho presented valid documents and Electoral Commission allowed her to participate in the by-election.
Although the polling exercise was soiled by chaos and bloodshed earlier in the day, Watongola emerged winner amid bribery accusations by her opponent.
But moments into the counting of the ballots Musumba said experienced a free and fair election.
Results coming in from various polling stations, showed Musumba trailing with a huge margin NRM’s Hajjat Rehema Watongola.
Some preliminary tallies showed Watongola leading by 7073 votes against Musumba’s 4077 in 41 polling stations out of 58 a difference of 2996.
“I participated in the exercise because of the need of for people of Kamuli to have good representation. Today we have seen a free and fair election. We have seen how independent out electoral commission is, and how professional our police are. I am happy and I feel liberated.”
Asked if she would seek legal redress, Musumba said it was unnnecasary since the people of Kamuli had made their choice.
