Court grants Minister Kabafunzaki bail

Kabafunzaki in the dock yesterday

Anti Corruption Court has on Wednesday morning released State Minister of Gender, Labour and Industrial Affairs Herbert Kabafunzaki on shs 5 million cash bail.

His three sureties were put on shs 50m non cash bond.

The trio is Eliab Byamukama a lecturer at Kampala Iternational University, Charles Mutabaazi and his wife Doreen Kabafunzaki, who the judge found fit to stand surety for the husband despite earlier protests by the state.

As part of the bail terms, the court retained the minister’s diplomatic passport and the certificate of his plot of land at Ndejje.

The Magistrate, Agnes Alum in her ruling okayed all the 3 sureties and also based on the fact that the minister has no pending criminal charges against him.

He was remanded to Luzira prison yesterday after he denied soliciting a bribe of shs 30m from a controversial Sudanese investor Aya Hamid.

The Minister was picked by detectives from Kampala Serena Hotel over the weekend where he reportedly received Shs 10m from agents of Aya Hotel proprietor Hamid to kill a case of sexual harassment.

He however maintained that he was innocent.

But a leaked telephone recording pinned the Minister as he requested to meet Hamid at a reclusive restaurant to “stop the police investigation” and “clear your (Hamid) name.”
