UCC considers all unregistered simcards ‘stolen’ property

Mutabazi and Kayihura addressing press

Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has upped its ante on telecom firms that have defied the directive of scrapping off all unregistered cards.

UCC executive director Godfrey Mutabazi re-affirmed his position after meeting telecom operators together with police boss Gen Kale Kayihura at the head offices in Bugolobi on Tuesday morning.

Mutabazi directed telecom companies to submit to UCC their gazetted places where they will be selling registered simcards.

“Street vendors caught selling simcards will be arrested,” he said.

Adding that all unregistered lines should be removed from circulation immediately not later than tomorrow.

Mutabazi said the population has 7 days to verify their simcards and should present valid national identifications whereas foreigners must possess a passport and refuges should seek an authentic certificate from the Office of the Prime Minister.

He warned telecom operators against breach of the guidelines or they risk revocation of their licenses and other heavy penalties.
