Popular comedian Trevor Noah rejects Kampala

Trevor Noah is arguably South Africa’s biggest comedy export.

Kampala on the other hand, is probably East Africa’s entertainment capital.

The comedian is the host of The Daily Show, a satirical news program on Comedy Central, a show he took over from popular host Jon Stewart.

The Daily Show is one of the most-watched and highest-rated daily late night talk show among all millennials (Adults 18-34, Adults 18-24).

Available on-air, online and on-the-go via the Comedy Central app, Comedy Central  is the #1 brand in comedy.

I am not coming to Kampala

The comedian this afternoon took to Twitter to deny media stories on many Uganda media sites including ChimpReports, MatookeRepublic, The Observer newspapers that he was headed to Kampala together with popular Jamaican artistes Chaka Demus & Pliers to celebrate the Uganda Cultural Week which is slated for October 29th to November 04th.

Using his known twitter handle @Trevornoah, the comedian wrote he was not headed to the banana republic.

“This is a scam. I am not coming to Uganda” Trevor tweeted against a previous tweet from Matooke Republic that suggested he was headed to Kampala.

Not new to controversy

In December 2014, Noah became a recurring contributor to The Daily Show.

In March 2015, Comedy Central announced that Noah would succeed Jon Stewart as host of The Daily Show; his tenure began on 28 September 2015

Within hours of his being announced as Stewart’s successor, attention was drawn on the Internet to several jokes that Noah had made through his Twitter account.

Trevor’s tweets were criticized as being offensive to women or Jews, and making fun of the holocaust.

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD), said that the jokes were not signs of anti-Jewish prejudice and that they were part of Noah’s style of comedy.

Egg in the face

With Trevor Noah having been lined as the lead artiste for the comedy festival at the National Theatre in Kampala, the organisers including leading comedian Salvador must be in panic mode.

The initiative was expected to boost Uganda’s cultural image abroad and boost tourism ratings under the theme “exploring and celebrating Uganda’s cultural diversity”. The show now hangs in balance with Trevor Noah’s cancellation
