Three weeks ago, TrumpetNews published an article titled; why FDC won’t have a representative in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The detailed analysis indicated that both opposition and independent candidates were at the mercy of NRM party which shares the biggest number of slots- 6 out 9 by virtue of numerical strength.
And yesterday 398 out of 428 MPs convened at Parliament to vote for 9 representatives to the East African Parliament.
After a whole day of campaigns which were marred by drama and chaos mostly when FDC iron lady Ingrid Turinawe stepped on the podium to support her manifesto amid torrid hostility orchestrated by ruling party lawmakers.
The charged MPs unequivocally threw it on Ingrid’s face that they weren’t ready to back her EALA bid.
In response she restated how she had won by exposing their beastly behaviours as Members of Parliament.
Polling for 47 contestants began late in the evening and tallying ended at 10:00pm but results were predictable.
However FDC still had little hope in candidate Florence Ibbi Ekwau who received warm reception as she campaigned on the floor of Parliament.
Below is how candidates performed;
Rose Akol – 370 Votes
George Odong – 346
Mathias Kasamba – 359
Fred Mukasa Mbidde – 311
Mary Mugyenyi – 341
Denis Namara – 329
Chris Opoka – 298
Susan Nakawuki – 329
Regan Okumu – 274
Paul Musamali – 350.
FDC candidates; Ibbi garnered 179 votes while Ingrid polled 25.
As anticipated, all 6 NRM nominees went through, as well as the incumbent opposition candidates Fred Mukasa Mbidde, (DP) and UPC’s Chris Opoka.
The MPs also elected one independent candidate Susan Nakawuki, to fill the nine positions.
