This year’s Club Music Video Awards (CMVA) which were unveiled at the close of last year are likely going the wrong way,even with the release of nominees list.
Already, two top artistes, Bebe Cool and Sheebah Karungi last week openly rejected their nominations and announced they didnt want to be part of awards.
Controversy reigns
The awards which are making a come back after a four year break return with more dirt than they left. According to the organisers, the CMVA’s are a music award show created specifically for Ugandans to celebrate and uplift tastefully different urban music.
Bebe Cool and Sheebah opt out
Without Bebe Cool and Sheebah on the nomination list, the awards look modest and a sham. The duo are Uganda’s best male and best female artistes respectively. The two also swept most of the recently concluded Hipipo Music Awards which also closed on a controversial note with accusations of artistes bribing the organisers to bag the awards.
“Let me ask the credibility of these CMVA’s that took a break for two years without any reasonable explanation and have now woken up, if i may guess, on the wrong side of the bed” wrote Allan Kiwa, part of Sheebah Karungi’s management team.
“CMVA launched at Club Play and didnt invite any artiste! They have gone ahead and recruited foreigners as the organisers and judges of our own home grown talent. This is what we call insult on another level to the Ugandan music industry” Allan added.
Organisers fight drags in Nile Breweries.
The Club Music Awards have Nile Breweries’ Club Beer as the sole sponsor. The awards label though is owned by Urbane Music Group which is owned by Peter Katonene, Sylvester Lalum. The initial owners of the label who failed to manage the awards sued the new organisers with the case hastily settled out of court.
“As the team behind Sheebah Karungi, we have chosen to exit the CMVA. We advise that you stick to brewing beer and leave music to people who know what music is made of, for it is not wheat! We have also seen your top management employees resigning. First it was Shem Semambo and now Daniel Ogong, please resolve that first. We advise that you comply to our request before we seek legal advice” concluded Allan.
